Icarus - The Prince of Heaven

ACRYLIC ON CANVAS 90X150CM

“I warn you, Icarus, fly a middle course:

Don’t go too low, or water will weigh the wings down;

Don’t go too high, or the sun’s fire will burn them.

Keep to the middle way.”

                                               ¬ Metamorphoses by Ovid

This piece captures the tragic moment when Icarus, intoxicated by hubris and the ecstasy of flight, descended to his watery demise as his wings of wax and feathers began to melt the closer he got to the sun.  Icarus serves as a cautionary tale of the dangers of extremes and ignoring the importance of moderation. The artwork’s interpretation of the Icarus myth is an invitation for us to introspect on the cost of our personal over-ambition and why we sometimes choose to fly too close to the sun.
